MarinIJ: Tiburon rolls out red carpet for art festival
MarinIJ: Tiburon rolls out red carpet for art festival
With only about one month left to summer, the second annual Tiburon Art Festival promises to keep the warm-weather fun going a while longer.Art, music, drinks and face painting are all in the plans for the two-day event on Aug. 23-24. For six months, more than 75 volunteers have been working to create an expanded version of last year's festivities. Overall, the goal of the festival is for Bay Area residents to relax and rediscover what Tiburon has to offer.
"We're here to show off beautiful Tiburon and to have people take advantage of the waterfront, the restaurants and the shops," said festival co-chair Carolyn Wendler. "We really just want people to come and enjoy the town."
At the 2007 festival, about 2,000 people walked along historic Ark Row and discovered the talents of artists from all over the Bay Area. Though the festival was deemed successful, this year organizers are hoping to liven up downtown Tiburon even more with a larger variety of musical groups, drinks and artists.
Painters, sculptors, wood workers, photographers, jewelry makers and glass workers were all hand selected in June by judges Apsara DiQuinzio, the assistant curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Phillip Linhares, chief curator of art at the Oakland Museum of California. This year, a diverse group of 64 artists is expected to exhibit work alongside some new, family-friendly attractions.
At the north end of the street, kids can get their face painted and watch magic shows while on the South End Patio they can find art projects for more hands-on fun. Throughout the weekend, four bands will play music ranging from jazz to R&B to country.

Woodturner, Thomas Ludlum - Pheasant Wood Vase
"Pheasant Wood Vase" by Thomas Ludlum, woodturner.
"My love for woodturning started 9 years ago. I have done ceramics in the past so woodturning felt like a natural step. I am fascinated by the diversity of woods and the possibilities it presents. The variety of colors and textures helps me appreciate the challenges of each piece."
Visit Thomas Ludlum's website at: http://tludlam.com/
Photographer Bob Kreisel - Seperate Benches
"When I was ten I sent away for a 99 cent mini plastic camera that fit in the palm of my hand. I took a picture of a deer in the zoo. my mom loved it. I have been taking pictures for her ever since. I shoot whatever catches my eye or stirs my emotions. My heroes are Norman Rockwell, Cartier, Bresson and Eugene Smith."

FAQ: Artist Frequently Asked Questions
Pegboard
How many pegboards do I need?
How much weight can I hang?
Can I get my own pegs at the Hardware store?
Sure but be sure they are the correct size – ¼”. This is bigger than the pegboard commonly found in garages around America!
Tents
Can I hang items from the frame? Yes you may hang items from the frame but you may not put any holes in the tent or the side panels.
Set-up
You can set up on Saturday morning form 7-10am.
How far will I have to move my art? That depends on the booth location. You will be able to unload at either end of Ark Row and in the parking lot which has 4 sets of steps up to Ark Row. We will let you know as it gets closer, where to unload for your booth.
Security
What security are you providing?
We have hired a security company to patrol the street at night. There should be 2 security people on all night. The Tiburon and Belvedere Police will make extra rounds in the area. We will do what we can, but you are still responsible for loss or damage to your art.
That is up to you. If it is not too difficult to move we would suggest taking it home at night.
Do the front panels help secure /lock the tent?
The front panels are designed to help protect the art from the weather. They would be a deterrent to theft if they are secured. They do not lock.
Electricity
How does the electricity to the tents work?
We will have 3 large generators for the festival. They will be in the parking lot and the electricity will be bought up to the tents. Each tent that requests electricity will have 1 outlet. You should bring an outlet strip with you if needed.
